The Director of Accounting is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of accounting practices that result in providing comprehensive financial reporting, analytics, forecasting, and budgeting. Oversees the credit union’s operating expenses, month-end close process, external financial audits, and the general ledger system. Ensures that financial reporting, accounting records, accounting policies, and procedures are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and NCUA requirements. Assists members and staff with related issues when appropriate. Demonstrates leadership in developing and managing employees and in contributing toward vision and direction of the organization. Promotes and supports the organization’s, mission, values, and culture. Works to support high employee engagement and is a cultural champion.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Must effectively carry out the following essential duties and responsibilities of this position in a manner that consistently demonstrates Sun Federal’s mission, values and culture. Other duties may be assigned.
- Ensures execution and development aligned with Sun Federal’s Leadership Competencies which are: Lead People, Inspire Others, Think Critically, Communicate Clearly, and Develop People.
- Provides leadership to the Accounting Department through goal setting, delegation, and communication. Determines work procedures and department equipment and supplies. Assigns duties and examines, appraises, and rewards for the quality of work. Formulates and implements corrective action as needed. Provides for employee training, cross training, and development.
- Oversees all financial accounting record keeping of the organization. Supervises the development and implementation of financial information and control systems, including general ledger, budgeting, cost accounting, and other subsystems. Oversees the production of financial reports as well as management reports.
- Ensures that accounting functions and duties are accurately and promptly completed.
- Oversees the preparation of regulatory and governmental reports.
- Oversees and reviews the monthly financial report packet.
- Periodically reviews management’s information needs and modifies the reporting systems as needed.
- Develops, implements, and maintains a cost center accounting program that ensures the proper allocation of income and expenditures.
- Ensures that records and reports are prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and government regulations.
- Oversees the timely payment of all credit union obligations, submission of related reports or other documentation, and adherence to all internal purchasing policies and procedures.
- Develops a department business plan in collaboration with the Director of Finance that supports the credit union vision and plan.
- Develops a calendar of monthly, quarterly, and annual deadlines and priorities.
- Develops, maintains, and tests the cross-training matrix, department business continuity plan and other contingency processes as needed in collaboration with the Director of Finance.
- Reviews assigned GL monthly reconcilements and annual accounting budgeting with a primary focus on operating expenses.
- Provides back-up support to the Director of Finance, Chief Financial Officer and other Finance and Accounting Department functions.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for auditors. Fulfils accounting-related requests of outside examiners and auditors during an audit and responds to any resulting findings or recommendations.
Qualification Requirements

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
Required Knowledge: Has supervisory/managerial responsibilities. Strong knowledge of Asset Liability Management Analysis. Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, Credit Union industry accounting practices and procedures, and governmental regulations and reporting requirements. Ability to understand and produce annual financial business plan. Technical understanding of automated accounting and other industry information systems.
Experience Required: Five to eight years of related progressive experience in a financial institution of a similar or larger size. Supervisory experience required.
Skills/Abilities: Ability to assist and supervise others. Well-organized and attentive to detail. Able to meet deadlines and manage projects. Strong Excel knowledge.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions.
Mathematics Ability: Ability to compute discount, interest, profit, and loss. Able to perform simple algebra.
Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias. Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling and grammar. Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct punctuation (or sign equivalent) and variation in word order; using present, perfect, and future tenses.
