The Director of Business Development is responsible for planning, directing, and executing business development strategies. Drives business to the Credit Union in support of Sun Federal’s mission, strategic plan, and long-term financial sustainability. This role combines hands-on business development activity with strategic insight, market analysis, and advisory input to leadership. This position leads initiatives that expand membership, strengthen sponsor group and community partnerships, and deepen consumer and business member relationships while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Sun Federal policies. Acts as a cultural champion and supports engagement throughout the Credit Union.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Strategic Input & Planning
- Provide strategic-level insight and recommendations to executive leadership based on market trends, competitive analysis, sponsor group performance, and member feedback.
- Participate in business planning, goal setting, and strategic initiative development related to membership growth, market expansion, and relationship development.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of business development programs and propose enhancements to improve outcomes and return on investment.
- Identify emerging opportunities, risks, and gaps within the field of membership and recommend data-informed solutions.
- Establish and refine business development processes and best practices.
- Business Development Execution
- Create and execute a business development strategy that supports membership growth, loan and deposit expansion, and long-term relationship development.
- Develop, manage, and expand sponsor group (SEG), school branch, and community partnerships within the field of membership.
- Sell products and open member accounts. Determine member needs and recommend appropriate products and services to deepen the relationship.
- Conduct outreach to prospective and existing consumer and business members to assess financial needs and recommend appropriate products and services.
- Take action to engage with new partners through a consultative, consistent follow-up process.
- Coordinate and conduct financial education sessions, speaker events, seminars, community events, and other publicity.
- Represent Sun Federal at sponsor group, school, business, and community events in a professional and compliant manner.
- Ensure member needs, requests, and inquiries are promptly and courteously addressed.
- Maintain productive relationships with associations and the greater community to further the overall objectives and policies of the Credit Union.
- Consider the Credit Union target market in all partnership efforts. Identify opportunities with maximum potential and likelihood of success.
- Establish relationships with sponsor group key contacts that advocate for the Credit Union within their respective organization.
- Identify potential candidates to serve on the Sun Federal Advisory Board.
- Uphold cooperative values and promote the Credit Union’s purpose, products, and services.
- Collaboration & Influence
- Collaborate with Retail Branch, Marketing, and Business Solutions teams to coordinate outreach efforts, referrals, and messaging.
- Support business services growth by assisting with business account openings, referrals, and relationship development in partnership with Business Solutions team.
- Enable appropriate, timely hand-offs to teams that can best serve member and sponsor group needs.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for business development best practices, sponsor group engagement, and community outreach.
- Influence outcomes through partnership and expertise rather than direct authority.
- Collaborate, contribute, and communicate for the success of the organization.
- Measurement & Reporting
- Track prospective sponsor group and member activities and review progress with Chief Marketing Officer at regular intervals.
- Monitor performance metrics and analyze results to ensure effective use of Credit Union resources.
- Keep the Chief Marketing Officer informed of initiatives, planned activities, and any significant concerns.
- Consult on the budget process for your respective area. Monitor spending to ensure you are operating within the defined budget.
- Management Responsibilities, if applicable
- Train and develop business development officers.
- Set individual and team performance goals.
- Develop team members on prospecting methods, lead generation, and relationship management.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching.
Qualification Requirements

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field or equivalent work experience.
Required Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of all Sun Federal products and services. Thorough knowledge of account opening policies and procedures. Thorough knowledge of Credit Union Business Solutions, Wealth Management, loan and savings products, underwriting standards, and applicable policies and procedures.
Experience Required: Five to eight years of Business Development and/or Sales Management experience. Previous supervisory experience desired.
Skills/Abilities: Strong written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to write clear, concise memos, emails, letters, and give presentations to large and small groups. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to gather, analyze data, and provide sound recommendations.

Working Conditions: Frequent local travel and occasional out-of-town travel required. No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions (such as in a typical office).

Reasoning Ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
Mathematics Ability: Ability to perform very basic math skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing two-digit numbers; to perform the four basic arithmetic operations with money; to perform operations with units such as inch, foot, and yard; ounce and pound (or their metric counterparts).
Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, atlases, and encyclopedias. Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis; correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent) and variation in word order; using present, perfect, and future tenses.
