Frequently Asked Questions

For Students

A student-run credit union is a Sun Federal branch operated by students once a week during lunch periods at their school. The purpose of the student-run credit union is to give students hands-on experience managing their money while also providing valuable personal finance education.

Students who volunteer gain experience through operating and promoting the credit union. It is treated like a regular job, with students going through an interview process and presenting themselves as professionals. Course credit may be offered, depending upon the school.

Sun Federal currently operates student-run credit unions at the following schools:

  • Clay
  • Lake
  • Maumee
  • Northwood
  • Otsego
  • Penta
  • Whitmer
  • Wilson
  • Perrysburg

Students and staff can use the StudentRun Credit Union just like they would a regular Sun Federal branch for eligible transactions and services. While students help operate the credit union, they do not have access to members’ information, ensuring privacy and security.

The overall goal of the student-run credit union program is to help students develop real-world financial skills, build confidence in managing money, and learn the importance of saving and financial responsibility.

To open an account, requirements depend upon the student’s age:

  • Students aged 13–15 can open an account with a parent or guardian.
  • Students aged 16 and older can open an account on their own.
  • There is a $5 minimum deposit required to open an account. Sun Federal provides this $5 for students, so no initial deposit is needed.

For each person who will be on the account, the following information is required:

  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Current address
  • Phone number
  • Email address

Additionally, any account owner age 18 or older must provide a valid state-issued ID.

Documents will need to be signed either in person or via electronic signature.

For Parents

Parents or guardians who are joint owners on an account will have access to it. Information such as activity and balances can be seen, and controls can be set through Digital Banking.
